Golf Australia Express : Issue 15
In an age when marketing rules the roost on the PGA Tour, no golfer has reinvented himself quite like Crane. He’s no longer known as the slowest guy on Tour—Kevin Na has usurped that crown—but rather the guy from those funny golf videos. Using the marketing might of social media, Crane launched a series of humorous YouTube videos in an attempt (we’re sure) to show golf fans another side of him. What we’re unsure is whether he knew it would generate the cult following that followed. But he should have. The global reaction to his workout, pre-game, slow play and dance videos are further proof golfers are indeed fun-loving people who enjoy a laugh as much as the next. Oh, and they love a guy who can take the Mick out of himself, too. (Take note Tiger). Lines from Crane’s video clips like “the snake shaker”, “in the middle of the now” and “do you like everything about yourself?” are making their way into the everyday golfer’s on-course lingo in the way many did from cult films Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore. The great paradox that is Ben Crane is he’s both one of golf’s most boring players to watch and now one of its biggest drawcards. And we need more of him. After all, in a sport that often forces us to take our medicine, Crane has shown that laughter is the best kind of all. OTG ASIDE FROM BEING THE FUNNY MAN ON THE PGA TOUR, CRANE IS A DEVOTED DAD TO HIS THREE CHILDREN AND AN ADVOCATE FOR SEVERAL CHARITIES.
