Golf Australia Express : Issue 15
THEFINALTour event on European soil is again to be held t the prestigious Club de Golf Valderrama. The world- famous course has hosted 16 Volvo Masters, the first two editions of the American Express-World Golf Championship and the 1997 Ryder Cup when the late Seve Ballesteros led the European Team to glory on home soil. This week Graeme McDowell returns to defend his 2010 title. The Northern Irishman claimed the inaugural event by two shots over Dane Soren Kjeldsen, Ireland’s Damien McGrane and Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin. GRAEMEMCDOWELL’S 2010 season was remarkable. Three wins including a US Open placed the Northern Irishman as one of the game’s elite. But the major winner has had a 2011 season to forget. Down at 22 in the current Race to Dubai standings, McDowell hasn’t enjoyed a win this year. But expect the gritty 32-year- old to turn it around this week. He won here last year and loves the course, and a third finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship a few weeks back shows he’s close to finding that winning formula. DENMARK’S THOMAS Björn will aim for his fourth title of the year at the Andalucía Masters. The 40-year- old is in vintage form, having collected a trio of wins at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters, Johnnie Walker Championship and the Omega European Masters. Björn has two career wins in Spain and “unforgettable memories” of the Valderrama course, having made his Ryder Cup debut here in 1997. He finished at last season’s event and looks well-placed to improve on that.
