Golf Australia Express : Issue 23
CARDING A bogey- free 4-under 68 to win an event in the desert must be a nice feeling. Just ask Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello who won Omega Desert Classic ahead of Stephen Gallagher and world No.3 Lee Westwood on Sunday. Winless since the 2009 Austrian Open, 27-year- old Cabrera-Bello produced nerveless golf in Dubai producing three birdies on the back nine at the Emirates Golf Club to solidify a one-shot win at 18 under the card. “ It’s an unbelievable feeling and it’s been a really spectacular week for me,” Cabrera-Bello said after the event. And having begun the week with a scintillating 63 in round one, the Spaniard said he’d hold the win close to his heart. “ I’m really, really feel happy and proud that my name is going to be written down on the same trophy as Ballesteros and Olazábal and Jiménez and my great friend, Alvaro [Quiros].” Overnight leader Westwood and Scotland’s Gallagher shared second place after missing crucial birdie putts at the 18th. Cabrera-Bello collected €315,532 and moved to No.60 from No.119 in world ranking.OTG WHAT JUST HAPPENED ON THE EUROPEAN TOUR...
