Golf Australia Express : Issue 24
FIGHTING NERVES built up over eight years, a clutch four- metre putt at the final hole handed Australia’s Lindsey Wright the NZ Women’s Open crown. Tied at 9-under with clubhouse leaders Jessica Speechley and Alison Walshe as she stood on the 18th tee, 32-year-old Wright rattled the cup with a regulation birdie to snatch her first win in eight years. “It’s unbelievable. It’s still sinking in,” she said. “I putted really well all day and the last six holes I was really nervous.” The win was the biggest of Wright’s career and her maiden European Tour title. “I haven’t been in this position for a while and I thought to myself ‘I can win this.’” Wright started the day in a six-way share of the lead but started nervously with a bogey at the first. She quickly settled into her game, securing five birdies by the turn to get to 10-under par and lead by herself. The only other hiccup on her card was a double-bogey at the 13th. The former world No.12 drew on nine seasons of experience to rally, shooting seven birdies on the way to a final round 4-under 68. Speechley, who started Sunday four shots back, shot a stunning 7-under 65, while Walshe closed with a 3-under 69. Wright collected $30,000. The tournament, which was co-sanctioned by the ALPG and the LET, gives Wright a two-year exemption to the LET.
