Golf Australia Express : Issue 28
SOMETIMES KEEPING focus on your game playing golf can be challenging. And if you ever get the chance to jump on one of America’s classic tracks—Course No.3 at Medinah Country Club in Illinois—be aware that distractions are plentiful. With its stunning treed and lake environment, this place is bound to catch your eye and start your mind wandering. Located in the western suburbs of Chicago, the clubhouse has a distinctive Byzantine design and its grounds sit on more than 600 lush acres. And as you wind from fairway to green throughout this beautiful monster measuring more than 7385 metres from the tips, Medinah’s stunning appeal becomes more evident than its length. The three-waterfront par 3s over Lake Kadijah—holes 2, 13 and 17—are world class. And this set of thrilling holes is sure to be the main source of your post-round reflections. Better chuck some extra balls in the bag. You’ll likely need’em. Opened in 1928, the five-time major host is steeped in rich history. Hale Irwin won his third US Open in 1990 after winning a playoff with Mike Donald. Irwin’s improbable 45-foot birdie putt at the 72nd hole was a real gem. And for final round drama, what about the thrilling battle at the 1999 PGA Championship between a 19-year-old Sergio Garcia and 23-year-old Tiger Woods? Tiger held off the rampaging Spaniard to win by a shot, but it was Sergio’s unbelievable recovery from behind a tree at the 16th that’ll be most remembered. In September, Medinah Country Club hosts the Ryder Cup again, continuing its tradition of staging golf’s biggest events.
