Golf Australia Express : Issue 32
THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE... HEMIGHT BE in great shape physically, but Colombian Camilo Villegas’ form during the past two seasons has really slackened off. And that’s gotta be troubling the once-fancied world-beater. It didn’t seem long ago that Villegas was on top of the golf world. Spiderman’ won back-to- back titles back in September 2008. They were big ones, too. First he secured his maiden PGA Tour victory at the BMW Championship, before following up with a playoff win over Sergio Garcia at the Tour Championship. Both were FedEx Cup playoff wins and the titles catapulted the South American to second standing in the filthy-rich series behind Vijay Singh. He moved to No.7 in the world. With his tremendous physical power off the tee, quirky putting crouch, alluring persona— and not to mention being eye-candy for the ladies—Villegas was touted as one of the young guns in the game’s future. And in March 2010, after he strode to a comfortable five-shot win at the Honda Classic for his third PGA title, the prediction seemed pinpoint accurate. But more recent stats show golf’s contortionist is struggling to unwind himself out of a current slump. In 2012, he’s missed more cuts than he’s made, with his best placing a T19 at the Humana Challenge. But there’s still hope for the 29-year-old. If Villegas can manage to trim a shot per round (Tour average is 71.37) and find the middle of the fairway more often (he currently ranks 92nd in driving accuracy), he might well make another even-year a winner.
