Golf Australia Express : Issue 33
STAT THE THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE... HUNTER MAHAN IS WIDELY regarded as having the best swing on Tour. And with good reason. The American is enjoying a fine 2012 season, with wins at the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February and the Shell Houston Open a week before the Masters. The current FedEx Cup leader hardly had a shabby 2011 either, earning more than $3.5 million with nine top 10s. So why couldn’t he get a win over the line in 2011? After a glance at his driving accuracy stats, it’s clear the man with the golden swing lacked polish when it came to getting off the tee. Mahan was ranked down the pile at No.83 in 2011, finding the fairway just six times in every 10 lashes. But this season he’s striping it and is ranked No.6 on Tour in driving accuracy. Approaching the green from the cut surface more often has helped Mahan win a couple of close ones and he's banked more than $3 million in just eight starts. Now they’re figures sure to get the trophy-Hunter rubbing his hands with glee.
