Golf Australia Express : Issue 34
The NumBeRs DoN’T lIe... bIG-hITTInG Spaniard Alvaro Quiros was a smash hit on the european Tour last year. The 29-year-old enjoyed his most successful season, claiming two titles—the Dubai world championship and Omega Dubai Desert classic—six top 10s and more than €2.2 million to finish 6th in the Race to Dubai standings. with a long game that outdistances most on Tour, a strong iron-game and a sound-putting stroke, Quiros seemed destined to tear the Tour apart this year. On the contrary, the 191cm giant has missed more fairways than he’s found in 2012. At the other end of his game, the golden putting stroke that helped to him amass six european Tour titles has also gone AwOL. Quiros is posting scores more than 1.4 shots per round worse than his 2011 self. what has it meant? well for starters, no top 10s and a best finish of 29th two weeks ago in Malaysia. but he’s too good a player to not get back into contention soon. with a home crowd cheering him on this week in Spain, a massive turnaround in his game could be on the cards.
