Golf Australia Express : Issue 34
SUrE, ThaT aggrESSIvE approach to every shot has made him look silly on occasion. Remember the 2006 uS Open at winged foot? Mickelson blew his chances for the win with a wayward drive at the 72nd hole when all he needed was a par. “I’m such an idiot. I can’t believe I did that,” he said at the time. but it’s been that willingness to look stupid for the miraculous that has endeared him to so many golf fans. That, and his generosity. Mickelson can be seen signing autographs for legions of followers for hours on end at tournaments— more so than any other player on tour. he’s a man of the people and they claim him as their champion. but the generosity doesn’t end there. Outside of golf, Mickelson and his wife Amy started the Phil and Amy Mickelson foundation which primarily helps disadvantaged youth. It’s a family grounding, he says, that keeps his thoughts in perspective. but even Phil would be chuffed with himself for his latest achievement. After all, it’s not every day you become an immortal.
