Golf Australia Express : Issue 35
THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE... for aUStralIa’S Jason day, 2011 was a stellar year. Despite being a winless season, it was still his best to date, with the talented queenslander banking nearly $4 million and finishing ninth on the PGA Tour money list. Sitting on the brink of stardom, the 24-year-old took his game to a new level as a regular in the Sunday mix. he kick-started his 2011 campaign with a tie for ninth at the season-opening Tournament of Champions and matched that position three weeks later at the wGC-Match Play. but it was the six-event stretch bookended by superb runner- up finishes at the Masters and uS Open where Day showed his ability to match it with the best. JD moved into the world’s top 10 for the first time, reaching as high as no.7; he collected top 10s at will—10 in all—and regularly shot the lights out with a stroke average of 69.71, the ninth best on Tour. but that was last season. And thus far, 2012 has been far from breathtaking. his stroke average has blown out by more than a shot a round to 70.82 and he’s managed just one top 10 in his six starts. we know he’s had a frustrating time with an ankle injury, but his latest effort might show some sun on the horizon. Returning at last week’s wells fargo Championship for his first hit-out since withdrawing from the Masters, Day was confident the injury woes were now behind him. he finished T9 at 9-under with rounds of 70, 70, 69 and 70. not only did he notch up his first top 10 of the season, he also matched his 2011 stroke average that made him one of the game’s best talents.
