Golf Australia Express : Issue 38
S PAIN'S AZAHARA MUNOZ is the hottest golfer on the LPGA Tour right now. And it’s not surprising the diminutive 24-year-old is turning heads after a string of top-heavy results. Munoz, ranked No.20 in the world, won her maiden title at the Sybase Match Play Championship beating Karrie Webb, Stacy Lewis and Morgan Pressel along the way. And if you add a T4 at the Mobile Bay Classic and T2 at Lotte Championship in consecutive weeks leading up to the Sybase, it’s easy to see why she was the 2010 LPGA rookie of the year. With more than $650,000 already in the bank—already $130,000 more than last season’s total—Munoz is the next best thing after the phenomenal Yani Tseng. It appears her iron play, too, is scorching hot. Munoz can thank a steady improvement in finding greens in regulation for that—she's up 3% on her 2011 stat. She’s making more birdies—averaging 3.31 a round in 2012 as opposed to 2.81 in 2011. And with that her scoring average has dropped from 72.11 in 2011 to 71.38 this season.
