Golf Australia Express : Issue 40—The US Open
SAY WHAT? LETTER OF THE WEEK FOR ME, GOLF IS A tragic passion, not a means to becoming a millionaire. I don't even WD when my buggy breaks down and I have to push it up hills. I'm 72, work full time as a nurse and can't wait to get on to the golf course for my weekly game on a 29 handicap. Yes, Phil should have cancelled before the [Memorial] event. THE LETTER OF THE WEEK WINNER RECEIVES A DOZEN DIXON GOLF EARTH BALLS VALUED AT $49.95 —SueV,viaemail TELL US YOUR THOUGHTS WHEN BOTH YOUR WIFE and mother have had cancer hanging around to play crappy golf may no longer be your top priority. Phil is a remarkable man who has entertained us all the time going through private hell. Let’s not forget, take away Tiger and he has been the best golfer in the world over the last 10-15 years. Let's give the guy a break. — Adrian, via email I READ YOUR PIECE on players withdrawing from events with interest last week. To be honest I wasn’t aware this was happening. I guess you only hear about stuff like this when one of the high profile players is involved. Or have I just had my head in the sand? After reading the article I took a look at last week’s results and noticed there were another 13 withdrawals from the PGA, LPGA, European Tour and LET events. Surely they are not all injured? Not very professional at all. —Sean H, via email What’s up with the Aussies this season? Karen Lunn is the only Australian to win something worth noting, the Lalla Meryem Cup on the Ladies European Tour. With a host of players either leading or within a couple off the lead at various events last weekend, I was expecting to read of another success in OTG Express on Monday. Oh well, with nine starters this week there’s plenty of chances the Olympic Club will bear us a major champ. Although with just two US Open titles ever, the odds don’t look great. —Andrew K, via email
