Golf Australia Express : Issue 42
MAY 10, 2012. That's the day Rory McIlroy's season flipped on its head. The moment was that precise. McIlroy's untimely splash at the island green during the first round of the Players completely changed the direction of his season. After making a fourth birdie for the day at the 16th, the 24-year-old found water at the 17th . He carded a double- bogey then added five more during the next 19 holes to miss the cut. It was an anomaly in an otherwise strong start to the year, with four top-3 finishes from five PGA Tour starts including a win at the Honda Classic. Add two top 5s on the European Tour and McIlroy seemed unstoppable as the world No.1, boasting a 2.54 under par average. But since his encounter with golf's scariest hole at TPC Sawgrass, McIlroy has posted a combined 27-over par with a 2.09 over par average. That swing of more than 4.6 shots a round has led to the young gun missing four cuts in five starts. He showed signs of returning to form with a T7 at the St Jude Classic, but another blowout at the US Open hasn't helped his cause. The world No.2 is hoping to turn around his fortunes at home at the Irish Open this week. OTG Rory McIlroy Missing In Action: STAT: Scoring Average NUMBERS DON'T LIE...
