Golf Australia Express : Issue 44
P HIL MICKELSON MISSED the cut at last week’s Greenbrier Classic for the second season running. No big deal. Lefty has missed cuts before—76 times on the PGA Tour in total. But his 1-over par 71 on Friday marked the seventh consecutive round the 42-year-old failed to shoot par or better, and it’s the longest streak of Mickelson’s illustrious career without an under-par round. Looking back it appears the poor run of form began at Jack’s Place on June 1. Mickelson withdrew from Nicklaus’ The Memorial event in controversial circumstances after posting an opening round 79 at Muirfield Village. His reason for the withdrawal? Mental fatigue (too much golf and travel, he insisted). All rested up for an assault on the US Open two weeks later, Mickelson finished T65 after shooting 16-over at Olympic Club. Again he missed the mark (and cut) at the Greenbrier, failing to make the weekend by three strokes at the Old White TPC track. Ironically, Mickelson will now travel across the Atlantic to play at Castle Stuart in this week’s Scottish Open after requesting and receiving a last- minute sponsor’s exemption. The man who thought he needed a break from the game seems to be going to great lengths to fix his broken swing before the British Open. Only time will tell if it works.
