THE DEFENDER D ARREN CLARKE WASN’T kidding when he said he was preparing for a “very, very long” celebration after winning last year’s British Open at Royal St George’s. The Northern Irishman has spent the past 12 months trekking around the world relishing every moment with the iconic claret jug firmly under his wing. The 43-year-old claimed his maiden major title in what was his 54th major championship appearance and 20th crack at winning a British Open. It took a determined final round even- par 70 to get to 5-under to secure the win ahead of American pair Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson. It was a fairytale win for one of golf’s nice guys.
