Golf Australia Express : Issue 46
Moving Up: Sergio Garcia STAT: Sand Saves NUMBERS DON’T LIE... STAT THE W HILE HE DOESN’T spend more time in the sand than David Hasselhoff, Sergio Garcia is certainly more graceful at getting out of it. At least this year he is. Garcia’s dramatic improvement in the European Tour’s ‘sand saves’ stat—up from 171 in 2011 to the top 10 on Tour today—has meant getting up-and-down from a bunker 75 per cent of the time. That's solid in anyone's language. It's a positive sign in an otherwise ordinary year for Garcia. Splitting his playing schedule between the European and PGA tours in 2012 has led to a mixed season overall for the temperamental Spaniard, his best results being a third at the Nordea Masters and a tie for fourth at the Northern Trust Open. Those results would be below Garcia’s expectations considering he won twice in 2011 and enjoyed several top 10s. Perhaps he should look at beaching himself for the summer to get his game back on track? OTG YEAR RANK % OF SAVES 2012 10 75 2011 177 41.7 Getting up-and-down from the bunker
