Golf Australia Express : Issue 47
Olympic course will be ready for testing in early 2015 (although it seems we hear these types of hurdles in the lead-up to every Olympic Games). Still, it’s concerning that the Rio mayor’s office said in May it has no Plan B if the development doesn’t get up, so this dispute could end up marring golf’s reintroduction to the Olympics. SUPPORT One of the more positive things to come out of golf’s Olympic bid was the support it received from tour players and legends of the game. Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam led the charge for the reinstatement, and Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and a host of other big names were glowing in their endorsement of the move also. The PGA and European Tours were also on board. The PGA of America even agreed to move the 2016 US PGA Championship to the last week in July to satisfy the IOC’s request of no golf majors in the same month as the Games. And the R&A also considered rescheduling The Open Championship to accommodate the Olympics. It appears all the big players in golf see the huge potential growth—and huge dollars— that could generate from a fruitful Olympic reintroduction. The bigger question will be whether those watching the Olympics would rather see amateurs battle it out on the newly-laid Rio fairways as would have been the case when professional sportsmen and women were banned from competing. It’s one question that keeps ringing in my ears. Less than four years til the golden era begins. Golf’s got as long to lose the silver spoon image. OTG All the big players in golf see the huge potential growth—and huge dollars—that could result from a fruitful Olympic reintroduction.
