The number of European golfers to lift the Stonehaven Cup above their bonce. England’s Lee Westwood, who won the 1997 Australian Open at Metropolitan Golf Club at the fourth extra hole against Greg Norman, is the sole member of the club. 1 30 The number of consecutive times the Australian Masters was held at Huntingdale Golf Club before a rotational system was introduced moving the event to Kingston Heath in 2009. 1936 The year American Gene ‘The Squire’ Sarazen became the first international player to win the Australian Open. Sarazen, who arrived in Australia with seven majors under his belt, cruised to a four-shot victory at Metropolitan Golf Club. 61 The record number of PGA Tour of Australasia titles won by Kel Nagle. Peter Thomson is next on the list with 33 victories, leaving Greg Norman third with 31 wins. 15 The number of Australian Opens won by an amateur. Ivo Whitton starred with five titles between 1912 and 1931 while Aaron Baddeley became the first amateur to win in 39 years when he took out the 1999 title at Royal Sydney Golf Club. He was also the last amateur to win our national open title. 4,326,709 The number of dollars Peter Senior had banked during PGA Tour of Australasia career by the end of the 2011 season. Senior heads Craig Parry, Peter Lonard, Robert Allenby and Greg Norman, who rounds out the top 5. 5 The number of feet Australia’s Rodger Davis had to overcome with his final putt to win the 1988 Australian Bicentennial Classic at Royal Melbourne. Davis managed a nervy par save at the second playoff hole to overcome American Fred Couples and win the richest prize offered in Australia at the time—$500,000. Smokin’ stuff Rodger. 3 The hole at Royal Melbourne’s composite course that became unplayable during the 1987 Australian Open when blustery northerly winds reeked havoc on an incredibly tightly-mown surface. After some players seven and eight-putted, Scotland’s Sandy Lyle led a player-protest walkout, before Greg Norman whopped the field by a lazy 10 strokes. The year the PGA Championship ended controversially with Jarrod Moseley and Peter Lonard jointly awarded the Joe Kirkwood Cup. The Australian pair could not be separated after halving the first playoff hole. With darkness upon them, tournament officials decided they could both have the title. Fair enough too, the beers were getting warm. 2002 THE 7 The record number of Australian Open titles won by an individual. It belongs to South African legend Gary Player. The Black Knight rode to victory in 1958, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1974. SUMMER NUMB3RS
