Golf Australia Express : Summer of Golf 2012-13
TELL US YOUR THOUGHTS TOM WATSON PLAYERS W HEN IT COMES TO major stars, they don’t come much bigger than 63-year-old Thomas Sturges Watson. The classy American has enjoyed an illustrious career that includes eight major championships—ranking him sixth on the all-time list of total major victories. Between 1975 and ’83, Watson won five British Opens, earning him the reputation as one of the greatest links players ever. He also added two Masters titles and a US Open to his trophy cabinet and managed to oust Jack Nicklaus as world No.1. Those who witnessed Watson’s stunning one-shot victory over the Golden Bear at Turnberry at the 1977 Open Championship—the 'Duel in the Sun'—will never to forget it. Now this first-class Yank returns to our sunny shores to play an event he won 28 years ago. That’s right— many forget Watson held aloft the Stonehaven Cup at the 1984 Australian Open. Welcome back Mr Watson. Stay as long as you like, sir.OTG
