Golf Australia Express : January 2013
DREAM the DREAM the pastas, game and fresh salads, while a fine wine list caps off a wonderful epicurean experience. There’s no doubt this really is a decadent retreat. WHILE still a fledgling in the grand scheme of storied fairways, Cabot Links continues to bring with it a rich history. Situated on the west coast of Breton Island, views of sprawling hills and valleys— which lead to the clear waters of the Gulf of St Lawrence— tell a silent story of intriguing ancient land. And as you dig another out from one of the 18 lush fairways at Cabot Links, you’ll be dumbfounded to discover you’re treading on a former coal-mining site, an industry that was once the lifeblood of the Inverness community until it finally ceased operation in the early 1990s. The town itself—like most mining towns the world over— is a proud one. And the latest addition to its rich culture and history has been an incredibly popular one with locals. Since mining ended in Inverness, the town’s economy struggled before redefining itself as a fishing port and tourist attraction. The new golf course—which is likely to bring curious visitors from around the world—is an important part of sustaining a healthy local economy. Thus far Cabot Links has been an astounding success—so much so in fact that another 18-hole course to be named Cabot Cliffs is in the pipeline and is expected to open in 2015. If it ends up half as good as the original, you might have to pencil in Nova Scotia for your next golfing holiday. OTG CABOT LINKS Green fees are $110 (approx. $106 AUD) for 18 holes for resort guests, or $130 (approx. $125 AUD) for golf-only guests. Caddies start at $45 per round. Rooms at Cabot Links Lodge vary between $165-$315 a night depending on the type of room and time of year. Visit cabotlinks.com for more details.
