WHAT DO YOU get when you cross Gary Player and a South African banker? Answer—one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. Opened in 1995, Leopard Creek Country Club—located on the southern border of the spectacular Kruger National Park in South Africa—is a parkland layout that captures the very essence and mystique of its intriguing homeland. Designed by the legendary Player and with some input from Jack Nicklaus and Ernie Els, the 360-hectare development sits alongside the picturesque Crocodile River near the town of Malelane. And like its name and surrounds suggest, a round of golf here is an incredibly wild experience. While you’re likely to see a number of celebrated South African animals as you walk the 6631 metres over lush Kikuyu grass, you’ll feel comforted by the fact you’re entirely safe to swing—clever use of architectural and landscaping techniques protect the course from any unwanted visitors. One of the more stunning vistas at Leopard Creek can be enjoyed from the 505-metre par-5 13th, which borders the Crocodile River and has the green situated 30-odd metres above the water level.
