Golf Australia Express : July 2013 - THE OPEN
CLARET OF CASH THE players will tell you it’s all about the quest for the Claret Jug, but the cash on offer at this year’s Open Championship is a handy pocket liner for everyone who doesn’t win. The tournament has upped its prizemoney to more than $8.6 million, with the winner to receive about $1.56 million of it. AROUND THE TRAPS OPEN BERTH IT’S hard to imagine how things could be any better for American Brooks Koepka at the moment. Just days after securing his European Tour card by winning his third Challenge Tour event of the year at the Scottish Hydro Challenge, he guaranteed a berth at The Open Championship by winning the International Final Qualifying Europe event at Sunningdale. Koepka finished one stroke ahead of England’s Oliver Fisher and two astern of Spaniard Alvaro Quiros at the 36-hole tournament. OPEN CLOSED SPARE a thought for luckless English golfer John Parry. Parry should have been in the field for the Open after an impressive performance at the qualifying event at Sunningdale. But he missed out by two strokes after a hole-in-one at the par-3 5th that bounced out of the cup and landed more than 20 feet away. He made par and may forever rue those two putts. CLUBGLOVE.COM.AU
