Golf Australia Express : July 2013 - THE OPEN
STILL regarded by many as the best current player not to have won a major, Nottinghamshire’s Lee Westwood remains a staple favourite at The Open. But the former world No.1—who has taken a rest until the major—has looked fatigued during the past month or so and he'll need to regain focus if he’s to improve on the T15 he recorded at the US Open in June. He hasn’t tasted success since the 2012 Nordea Masters. That said, Westwood certainly has form at his home major, recording a fourth place finish in 2004, a tie for third in 2009 and a second in 2010. Only thing missing is the loneliest number of them all. A FAVOURITE Briton the world over, Ian James Poulter could well be England's great white hope at Muirfield. While his Open form is nothing spectacular, he has enjoyed two top 10s in the past five appearances, including a runner-up to Padraig Harrington in 2008. One thing we do know is the 37-year-old is bitterly determined to win a major before the end of his career, and when Poults gets fired up...well, look out. From a pure spectacle point of view, Poults will be a popular favourite. LEE WESTWOOD IAN POULTER KEY STAT ACHILLES HEEL CHANCES? KEY STAT ACHILLES HEEL CHANCES? RANKING: 12 RANKING: 20
