Golf Australia Express : October 2013 - United Colours of Golf
In fact, it might have been more cost effective for them to pay him to landscape their entire state in one hit, rather than build courses in isolation. Indiana alone features 12 public and four private courses Dye created, each of them unique but also sharing a few of his trademark design cues. If you’re lucky enough to wander onto one of his courses, you might spot a few of those hallmarks. Plainly, Dye values lethal accuracy above all else. Narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens that are designed like parachute drop zones, rather than vast runways and landing areas, are a giveaway that ‘Dye was ’ere’, though he has relaxed his stance on both in recent years in a bid to not scare beginners away. Then there’s his inventor’s streak. Why go with conventional construction methods when there are opportunities to break new ground? The Dyes have often made use of railroad ties to hold their bunkers, and while building the Brickyard Crossing course in Indianapolis he got hold of the dismantled outer wall from a nearby speedway and worked that into his creation. Dye is now 87 years old and while he’s still doing what he loves, he won’t be doing it forever. But you’ll almost certainly be seeing little hints of his influence for the rest of your lifetime. His family’s business has been a veritable production line of young architects who have been blessed with tutelage under the master. The Dye legacy will live on long after he finally lays down his pencil. His course artistry is not that easy to brush off.
