Golf Australia Express : November 2013
MAJOR Changes T HE 2014 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at Royal Liverpool [below right) might be a long way from your mind right now, but for many Claret Jug hopefuls, it's front-and-centre. The Royal and Ancient (R&A) has announced some radical, sweeping changes to The Open Qualifying structure in an attempt to strengthen the field at golf's oldest major. Major changes include: • 72-hole worldwide qualifiers to replace the old 36-hole events • High finishes at lead-in events on PGA and European Tours will earn Open places • Three Open berths will be up for grabs at the Australian Open this month • In all, 44 Open qualifying spots are available at 14 worldwide events R&A chief Peter Dawson said the changes would ensure a more "rigorous" qualifying system and stronger Open field. "We recognise that players have increasingly busy schedules and that qualifying events are an addition to the calendar. If we can use Tour events instead that’s a bonus," Mr Dawson said.
