Golf Australia Express : November 2013
I F BRANDT SNEDEKER wanted to shed his ‘home track bully’ label, there was no better place to do it than at the Australian PGA Championship this week. The world No.9 wanted to finally lock down a victory overseas, and with fellow American Rickie Fowler to keep him company alongside Masters champion Adam Scott, Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast could have been the place it finally happened. “I love playing around the world and that’s one thing I haven’t done yet—win outside the US—but I’d love to do that,” Snedeker said last month. “It’s part of the reason why I’m going down there and I’ve had some good finishes in Australia before.” Those comments came before Snedeker withdrew from the event on Tuesday, a knee injury forcing one of the major drawcards to pull the pin late. Instead, Fowler will now top the big- name internationals teeing it up in his second trip to our shores and his only tournament of the Australian golf season. There’ll be no dinosaurs to distract him, either, with the event ending its 11-year association with Coolum and ill-fated union with moneyman Clive Palmer. Of concern for organisers will be the birdie-friendly Royal Pines course, with the quality field tipped to unceremoniously tear the layout apart. But who cares, this will be one helluva way to kick off a month of golf Down Under.
