But even while staring down this latest scandal, Johnson was still allowed to write the script, sending out a statement in which he said he would be taking a break to “use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced”. The PGA Tour’s policy of not revealing results of recreational drug tests or details of any penalties again allowed Johnson to play it his way, even if the growing storm has since revealed the reasons for his so-called ‘self-imposed’ hiatus. Can DJ drag himself back on track? That would appear to depend entirely on whether the 'self-imposed' ban is the wake-up call he needs, or simply an excuse to party harder for a few months while the PGA Tour isn't on his case. The fact that Johnson listed specific timeframes in his statement, including missing the Ryder Cup, would tend to suggest he's got a fairly concrete idea of when he might be back on course. They're hardly the words of someone who's battling personal demons and isn't sure when he'll be healthy. While players are more than entitled to their privacy, those inside the PGA Tour are almost universal in their agreement that Johnson's (and any PGA Tour) sanction should be made public.
