Golf Australia Express : August 2014
the preview W E'VE reached the final stage — the major winners list for 2014 is about to be completed. But as the 156 players set to kick it off at Kentucky's Valhalla Golf Club will tell you, the script to the PGA Championship is not yet written. For many years, the PGA has been considered the major most likely to dish up an unexpected champion. 'Barely-knowns' such as Y.E Yang, Shawn Micheel, Rich Beem and David Toms have capitalised on the major's less-than-inspiring 'Glory's Last Shot' catchphrase. More recently, we saw a kid called Keegan salute when next to no one knew who he was. That came a year after a quiet German by the name of Martin 'Who's He?' Kaymer stole the show. Yet while many underdogs have a Wanamaker trophy in their cabinets, it's hard to imagine one of the big guns missing out on a major opportunity at a fairly defenceless track with world rankings and Ryder Cup spots on the line this week. Can Sergio Garcia finally get that elusive first major, or will Rory spoil his party for a third time? Will Scotty snatch back the world No.1 ranking? Can Rickie get into the winner's circle? So many sub-plots. So much to gain. OTG An outsider's Major?
