T HE PGA Championship is the Toyota Camry of golf’s majors. The golf world stepped out of an immaculate new Ferrari at Augusta. It then hopped into a luxury Range Rover at the US Open before getting behind the wheel of a perfectly preserved Bentley at The Open. And now it’s got to make the homeward trip in a certified family runabout with cloth seats and only four speakers. Sure it does its job just fine, but it engineers about as much intrigue as a new doormat for your birthday. It’s not that the PGA Championship is any less desirable to its combatants or any less deserving of major status than the other elite tournaments. It’s just that after such a rich and rewarding couple of months of religious golf viewing, it’s hard to get excited about it. But this week we reckon there are plenty of compelling reasons to flick over to the action at Valhalla Golf Club and get enthusiastic about the year’s forgotten major.
