Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 147
Aside from its genuine links design, the playing surface on the course – especially in the winter months – distinguishes it from a host of other coastal tracks you might have experienced. While couch fairways prevail throughout summer, it is the flow of poa annua grass on both the fairways and greens during the cooler seasons that gives the course its traditional feel, where the height of the grass (rather than the species) determines your lie. It is golf in its purest form and an utter delight to play from. The biggest highlight at Barwon Heads from a playing perspective, however, is undoubtedly its selection of five par-3s, the first of which greets you at the 2nd hole. This 207m challenge from an elevated tee calls for a shot right of the green over a deep pot bunker, with the natural slope of the mound angling back towards the pin. Alternatively you can run a ball up through a narrow, undulating chute, carefully avoiding the sand trap if you like to live dangerously. And that right there is the real beauty of this course. It is golf as it was originally designed, where using imagination and creativity to navigate the course safely reign. There’s always more than one way to play any hole at Barwon Heads, which opens its playability to a wider range of abilities. The next short hole is the fourth, a 165m par-3 that plays so differently depending on whether the pin is on the top or bottom tier of the green – a superb hole that can have you hitting as much as a 3-iron from the tee when the wind gets up. But the pick of the one-shotters has to be the 130m 13th hole – proof a par-3 need not be long to be incredibly tricky and engaging. Playing from on top of a sand dune, the hole sits well below you, exposed to the wind and with severe undulations ready to run ITISGOLFASIT WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED, WHERE IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY REIGN. THE FIVE PAR-3s AT BARWON HEADS, INCLUDING THE 2ND HOLE (PICTURED) ARE AMONG THE BEST COLLECTION OF ONE-SHOTTERS IN THE WORLD.
