TIGER AIMS FOR 2016 RETURN TIGER Woods caught the golf world by surprise when he announced he had undergone a second operation on his troublesome back. The 14-time major winner was poised to launch his 2016 PGA Tour season at the Frys. com event in a few weeks but will not return to competition now until at least February. Woods, 39, announced on Friday that he underwent a micro-discectomy last week, which is the same surgery he had in March last year and saw him missing from the Tour for more than three months. Woods, who has played only 18 events since the start of 2014, had surgeons remove a small disk fragment that was pinching a nerve and causing discomfort in his back and hip. ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ _____ FURYK COULD MISS CUP VETERAN American Jim Furyk is a doubtful starter for the Presidents Cup after he withdrew from BMW Championship on Thursday after playing just six holes. The 45-year-old had a heavily taped left wrist, which was later diagnosed as a bone contusion or bone bruising. Doctors advised him not to hit balls until just before this week’s Tour Championship before deciding whether to play again this season. Furyk’s withdrawal was his first in two decades on Tour. “I tried to manage it ... but I’m not anywhere near 100 per cent,” Furyk said. “I’m having a hard time hitting through the ball and into the ground right now." He said he was concerned about his wrist with two big events left to play. “The Tour Championship and Presidents Cup...I’d like to be ready for both of them, if I can’t be ready for the Tour Championship I’d like to be ready for the Cup.” ____ ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ _ REDISCOVER YOUR DRIVE OCTOBER is Golf Month and if you can rediscover your game, or that of a friend, you can win some great prizes including a round in the Emirates Australian Open Pro-am.
