Golf Australia & Inside Sport Advert.indd 1 15/03/2016 9:16:21 AM The Shark himself insisted he’d be OK after it all, promising the gathered media he was still a success and could even learn how to perform brain surgery if he put his mind to it. The witty, long-time American golf scribe Dan Jenkins pounced, reacting by delivering a razor-sharp line I will remember for eternity: “Maybe so,” Jenkins would go on to write. “But he wouldn’t operate on this cowboy – not on Sundays, anyhow.” The scars we as golf fans still carry from that harrowing day 20 years ago were healed to a degree by Adam Scott’s heroics three years ago. ‘If Norman couldn’t do it, I’m glad Adam could’ was a common refrain. But Scott’s glory was 17 heartbreaking years in the making and didn’t completely salve the wound. Whether you single out the missed opportunity that was 1986, the sheer theft of ’87, the so- near-yet-so -far feeling of ’89, the open-air torture of ’96 or another frittered chance in ’99, one can’t help but wince at the memory of green jackets the Shark should have worn, but instead saw draped over another’s shoulders. I don’t need a decades-old video tape to remind me of that cold, shuddering feeling. E
