Golf Australia Express : GA Express 210
SIMPLY obscene. There’s no other way to describe what Woods did on the final hole at the 2000 Canadian Open. Leading by one, his tee shot found a fairway bunker some 213 yards from the green. Only the sublimely gifted or clinically insane would attempt a 6-iron from that lie to the green, which was guarded by water. Woods knocked it onto the back fringe. CONSIDERING it was dreamt up in order to breathe some life into the last few events of the PGA Tour season, initially the FedEx Cup looked like an excuse for Woods to line his pockets even further. He won the final two events of the series – the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship – to easily become the first FedEx Cup winner, and pocketed an extra $10 million for his trouble. NO PLAYER in history has ever won golf’s Grand Slam – all four majors in a calendar year, but when Woods saluted at the 2001 Masters, he did the next best thing. At that point he held all four majors simultaneously, having captured the 2000 US Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship titles. They called it the “Tiger Slam”, and given the number of genuine contenders on Tour these days, it’s a feat we may never see matched. “ROCCO, you’ve got Tiger for 18 holes tomorrow.” Assignments don’t come any worse than that, and Rocco Mediate’s fate was sealed after Woods rolled in a 15-foot birdie at the final hole of the 2008 US Open to force an 18- hole playoff the next day. Woods, as it turned out, was playing the tournament with stress fractures in his leg and a torn ACL, making his victory the next day all the more impressive. 2000 SAND?
