“And we’re bringing back the Ryder Cup because of it.” There is perhaps no better statistic to illustrate the winning team’s all-in mentality than the fact that every United States team member won at least a point throughout the three days – the first time that’s happened since 1975, when the Arnold Palmer-led Yanks crushed a team from Britain and Ireland. But the true test of whether America’s newfound dynamic is a lasting recipe for success or merely a flash in the pan will come in two years’ time. Winning on home soil against an inexperienced and underpowered European team is one thing, but defending the Ryder Cup in France against a squad that will likely feature many of those same players who now have Cup experience on their resume is another challenge entirely. Mickelson summed it up best in the wash- up from Sunday, acknowledging that while the US team had made giant strides, those gains would be forgotten in a heartbeat if the Ryder Cup was back in European hands in 2018. “ We need to build on this,” he said. “Otherwise it’s all for naught.” E THE TRUE TEST OF WHETHER AMERICA’S NEWFOUND DYNAMIC IS A LASTING RECIPE FOR SUCCESS OR MERELY A FLASH IN THE PAN WILL COME IN TWO YEARS’ TIME.
